With league soccer in full swing, Downey, Warren positioning for post-season berths

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 9-8-3 and a S.G.V.L. record of 5-1-1. 

Warren defeated Paramount at Paramount 4-0 on 1/10, defeated Gahr at Warren 9-0 on 1/13 and were defeated by cross-town rival Downey at Downey 2-1 on 1/17.

The Bears defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 3-0 on 1/19, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 2-1 on 1/24 and tied Paramount 0-0 at Warren on 1/26.

Warren hosted Gahr on Tuesday and defeated the Lady Gladiators 9-0. The Lady Bears traveled to Downey on Thursday in their much anticipated rematch (score unavailable at press time). The Lady Bears will close out league play when they host Dominguez next Monday and when they travel to Lynwood next Wednesday.

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 21-3-3 and a league record of 10-0. The Lady Bears were defeated by El Dorado 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the C.I.F. Division Three playoffs.

■ The Downey High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 10-8-2 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 7-1. 

The Lady Vikings were defeated by Dominguez at Dominguez 1-0 on 1/10, defeated Lynwood at Downey 4-0 on 1/12 and defeated cross-town rival Warren at Warren 2-1 on 1/17.

Downey defeated Gahr at Gahr 3-0 on 1/19 and defeated Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on 1/24. The Lady Vikings defeated Dominguez at Downey 8-0 on 1/26 in their rematch, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 3-1 on Tuesday and played Warren at Downey yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

The Lady Vikings will close out S.G.V.L. play when they host Gahr on Monday and Paramount on Wednesday. 

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 12-7-6 and a S.G.V.L. record of 8-2. Downey was eliminated by Yorba Linda in the first round of the C.I.F. Division Three playoffs.

Warren was defeated by Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on 1/10, defeated Gahr at Warren 3-0 on 1/12 and tied cross-town rival Downey at Warren 0-0 on 1/17 after two extra time periods.
The Bears defeated Dominguez at Warren 2-0 on 1/19, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 1-0 on 1/24 and tied Paramount 1-1 at Warren on 1/26 in their much anticipated rematch.

■ The Downey High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 14-4-2 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 5-0-2. The Vikings defeated Dominguez at Downey 3-0 on 1/10, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 5-0 on 1/12 and tied Warren at Warren 0-0 on 1/17 after two extra time periods.

The Vikings will close out S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Gahr next Monday and when they host Paramount next Wednesday. The game next Wednesday against Paramount has league title, playoff positioning and C.I.F. seeding written all over it.

Coach Mires, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing the season up strong and earning a good draw in the C.I.F Division One playoff bracket.

The Vikings finished last season with an overall record of 12-10-2 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-3-1. The Vikings were defeated by Royal at Royal 1-0 in the first round of the C.I.F. Division One playoffs.

■ In late Wednesday night basketball action at Downey High School, the Lady Vikings improved to 18-6 overall and 6-1 in S.G.V.L. play with a 63-56 win against the Lady Knights. 

The Downey High School boys’ basketball team fell to 13-11 overall and 2-5 in S.G.V.L. play after a hard fought, 52-51 loss against the Knights.
