William Grant was longtime Elk

DOWNEY - William Lawson Grant, 83, passed away Nov. 14 in Downey with his family by his side.He and his wife, Beverly, moved to Downey in 1950. They were involved in a variety of clubs and volunteer groups. Grant was a member of the Hollywood Yacht Club and the United States Power Squadron the past 60 years and was the youngest district commander in their history. He was also a member of Downey Elks for 49 years. He was in the printing industry and owned his own company for several years. He changed careers in the 1980s to be closer to his passion - the ocean - and became a tugboat captain for the L.A. Harbor, where he was licensed to bring in 100-ton ships. He is survived by a son, Gary (Charleen) Grant, of Huntington Beach; a daughter, Rhonda (Mike) McConohy, of Dublin, Calif.; grandchildren, Danielle McConohy, of Dublin, and Chaz, Eric and Cara, of Huntington Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Elain Grant. Services were held yesterday at Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Inglewood Park Cemetery in a private graveside service at a later date.
