Water bill scammers target Downey residents
DOWNEY — Downey residents are being warned about a phone scam that is increasing in frequency.
Crooks are calling residents and requesting cash payments to avoid having their water shut-off by the city. The scammers then arrange to meet at designated locations to accept payment.
Water bill payments should only be made in person at City Hall (at the Finance window); online through the city’s website; or by calling (855) 748-6019.
Residents should never meet someone to make a cash payment for a utility bill.
For questions, call the City of Downey at (562) 904-7246. If you have been a victim of this scam, call the Downey Police Department at (562) 861-0771.
