Warren swimmers win league title

DOWNEY - The Warren High School girls' swim team are the 2012 S.G.V.L. champions.The Bears have an overall record of 7-1 and an undefeated league record of 3-0. Warren had a much anticipated meet against cross-town rival Downey on April 26 and defeated the Vikings 122-48. As the team season has come to an end, Warren has now turned their attention to league which started Wednesday (scores unavailable at press time) and league finals May 5. Downey, Gahr, Paramount and Warren all participate in league preliminaries and each school is allowed four entries per individual event. The top eight fastest times that posted on Wednesday will compete in league finals Friday to score points for their school. Coach Cordero said that her freshmen have left "skid marks" on the bottom of the pool because her swimmers are swimming so fast. Cordero said that Kim Shepherd, Brittney Baron and Valerie Orozco are not only swimming well but are also very versatile. Shepherd swims the freestyle events and breaststroke, Baron swims the backstroke and freestyle events and Orozco swims the all around events. Cordero further stated that sophomore Destiny Hernandez has really improved in all of her freestyle events and switched from middle distance (200 and 500 meters) to the sprints (50 and 100 meters). Celeste Moreira has been doing well in her freestyle and butterfly events and Coach Cordero believes it would be exciting for her if she makes those time standards this week. Coach Cordero has seen great improvements from Alexis Huerta and Graci Salinas. Both swimmers play water polo for Warren and have taken their training seriously to improve their speed and have done a nice job dropping times all season. Coach Cordero stated that Millikan has been Warren's toughest competition this year due to Long Beach being a hotbed for feeder swim club programs in the area and explains the Lady Bears' lone loss this season. Cordero said that Warren currently has 9-10 girls whom have already qualified for C.I.F. with automatic time standards. In C.I.F., there are preliminaries and finals. The top 16 fastest times from preliminaries will make it to the finals. Cordero hopes that this year the Lady Bears will make it back into the top 8 in not only their individual events, but the relays as well.
