Warren High student named Youth of the Year
DOWNEY – Warren High’s Maggie Gomez has been named Youth of the Year by the Rio Hondo Boys and Girls Club. In a letter of recommendation, Rio Hondo Boys and Girls Club chief professional officer Robert Rubio described Maggie as “a very mature young lady.”
“Whether in our athletic department, technology lab, arts and crafts center or social recreation, Maggie has always displayed leadership while including all those less knowledgeable,” said Rubio. “She has been a Club Kid for eight years and really excelled these past two summers, volunteering every day from 7 a.m. till noon.”
“During regular service hours she helped secure dedicated volunteers (her peers) that were an asset to most excursions to recreational facilities,” Rubio continued. “As a sports athlete and a water polo team member, she was especially helpful on our days to the local aquatourium. This past year, our sign-in log lists approximately 200 hours of service by tutoring, coaching, teaching computer skills and being a positive role model to the younger members.”
Maggie currently has a 3.8 GPA and plans to attend Cal State Long Beach on her way to becoming a pediatrician.
