Warren girls soccer wins league title
DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 12-8-3 and a S.G.V.L. record of 8-1-1.
The Lady Bears defeated Gahr at Warren 9-0 on 1/31, defeated cross-town rival Downey at Downey 2-0 on 2/2, defeated Dominguez at Warren 5-0 on 2/6 and defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 2-0 on Wednesday night. The Lady Bears are currently on a seven game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) and are playing some of their best soccer of the season as the playoffs approach.
The Lady Bears are the 2017 S.G.V.L. champions. The Downey Lady Vikings finished their season with an overall record of 10-10-2 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 7-3. Downey was defeated by Paramount at Downey 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Warren will be competing in the C.I.F. Division 2 playoffs and Downey will be competing in the C.I.F Division 3 playoffs this year. Warren was moved to Division 2 this season due to their strong and improved play from last season.
Coach Dussan, her staff and players are all looking forward to the start of postseason play and making another run at the C.I.F. title. Warren finished last season with an overall record of 21-3-3 and a league record of 10-0. The Lady Bears were defeated by El Dorado 1-0 in the third round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Warren is currently ranked 606 in the nation and 250 in California.
■ The 2017 wrestling dual meet season has come to an end and neither Downey or Warren made the C.I.F. Western Division Final.
Suburban League champion Mayfair defeated Moore League champion Millikan 37-26 to claim the C.I.F. Western Division title for the second year in a row.
Top teams from the Del Rio League, Moore League, San Gabriel Valley League and Suburban Leagues, amongst others, converged in Lakewood last Saturday for the much anticipated showdown.
Warren was defeated by Mayfair 45-18 in the second round of competition. The Bears advanced to the second round after defeating the Moore League’s Lakewood 53-26 in their first round match.
Downey was seeded second entering the competition behind top seeded and returning champion Mayfair. Downey had a first round bye and defeated Arroyo 51-30 in the second round. The Vikings were then defeated by Millikan 60-13 in the semifinals.
Paramount defeated La Canada 60-18 in their first round match before losing to Millikan by the same 60-18 score in the second round.
As Millikan defeated Downey in one semifinal, Mayfair defeated the Del Rio League’s Santa Fe 53-12 in the other.
C.I.F. Southern Section competition will now continue with Individual, Master’s and State competitions in successive weeks to come.

Downey defeated Lynwood at Downey 63-56 on 2/1, defeated cross-town rival Warren at Warren 56-40 on 2/3, defeated Gahr at Gahr 35-32 on 2/7 and hosted Paramount at Downey yesterday in their final league game (score unavailable at press time).
Downey has been impressive this season with their only league loss coming to Lynwood at Lynwood 65-59 on 1/13. That loss was avenged in their second round league game against Lynwood at Downey on 2/1.
Downey could have clinched a tie for the San Gabriel Valley League title with a victory against Paramount yesterday. With the win, the Lady Vikings would be considered the top S.G.V.L. team on criteria due to the second round win against Lynwood.
The Lady Vikings have been led this season by Naelene Garcia’s 10.1 points per game, Alyssa Nevarez’s 7 rebounds per game and Surie Camacho’s 4.5 assists per game. Coach Harris, his staff and players are all looking forward to finishing league play strong and earning the top S.G.V.L. entry into the C.I.F. Division 2AA playoff bracket.
The Lady Vikings are currently on an eight game winning streak and playing their best basketball as the playoffs approach. Downey is ranked 953 in the nation and 110 in California.
■ The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record 13-12 and a S.G.V.L. record of 2-7.
Downey was defeated by Lynwood at Downey 52-51 on 2/1, was defeated by cross-town rival Warren at Warren 45-41 on 2/3 and was defeated by Gahr at Gahr 79-62 on 2/7. The Vikings hosted Paramount yesterday at Downey (score unavailable at press time).
Downey’s two league victories came against cross-town rival Warren at Downey 53-34 on 1/18 and against Paramount at Paramount 61-33 on 1/25.
In six of their seven league losses the Vikings were defeated by six points or less. Downey was defeated by Dominguez at Downey 46-44 on 1/11, was defeated by Lynwood at Lynwood 63-57 on 1/13 and was defeated by Gahr at Downey 63-58 on 1/20.
The Vikings were defeated by Dominguez at Dominguez 51-48 on 1/27, were defeated by Lynwood at Downey 52-51 on 2/1 and were defeated by Warren at Warren 45-41 on 2/3.
Downey has been led this season by Brian Chavez’s 14.6 points per game, Jesse Medina’s 5.9 rebounds per game and Chavez’s 3.4 assists per game. Coach Shelton, his staff and players are all looking to finish their league schedule out strong. The Vikings still have a winning record and were looking to get that win against Paramount last night.
