Walfrido Planas mourned

DOWNEY – Walfrido Elias Planas passed away Jan. 16 at Pacific Palms Health Care home in Long Beach with family at his side. A resident of Bell, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Antonia Carreno.

He was born Feb. 15, 1935 in Holguin, Cuba to Rogelio F. Planas and Gregoria A. Planas.

While in Cuba he was an accountant for Sinclair Oil Company. He immigrated to the U.S. on Jan. 15, 1970 and worked for Washington Iron Works in Gardena for many years until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sonia F. Planas; son, Rogelio C. Planas (Diana); daughter, Mercedes A. Roberts (Charles); brother, Wilfredo Planas (Oneida); sisters, Dalia Perez (Ramiro) and Bertha Planas; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 23, at Miller-Mies Mortuary in Downey at 4 p.m.
