Vons denies rumors it will close

DOWNEY - Amidst talk of a pending closure, Vons Market representatives say the aging store at 10001 Paramount Blvd. will not shut it doors.For months, city officials and community leaders have reported that the grocery store, which opened in the 1960s, would soon close and be replaced with a Mexican market, but on Wednesday, a store manager denounced the claims. Similar reports have arisen in the past concerning the profitability and sustainability of the Vons Market, but corporate spokesman Carlos Illingworth, Vons' manager for public affairs and government relations, has frequently denied such claims. The Patriot reached out to Illingworth and the Vons Market division office in Arcadia for comment, but received no response regarding these new reports. -Christian Brown, Staff Writer
