Volunteers needed for Special Olympics

DOWNEY – The city of Downey is recruiting volunteers to help this summer when Downey hosts more than 120 athletes participating in the Special Olympics World Games. As an official host town, Downey is hosting the athletes and their trainers July 22-24.

Volunteers will help with event set up and clean up, event logistics, pep rallies, decorating, ambassadors, and more.

Volunteer interest cards are available at the Parks and Recreation Office, located at 7850 Quill Dr., and on the city’s website. Deadline to return the card is May 1.

All volunteers are asked to attend an information meeting Saturday, May 2, at 9 a.m. at the Barbara Riley Center, where they will learn about their roles and the application process.

People selected to volunteer must attend a mandatory meeting June 20 at 9 a.m. at the Barbara Riley Center to cover event schedules and details, protocol, and more. Final volunteer assignments will be given by July 1.

For questions or more information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at (562) 904-7238 or log on to the city’s website at downeyca.org.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, speak English, have their own transportation, and be available July 22-24.

Volunteers are also subject to a background check.
