Tuohino recognized as 'bold woman'

DOWNEY -- Longtime resident Jean Tuohino was named Bold Woman of the Year by Christ Lutheran Church Feb. 22 during a special ceremony during regular service.Tuohino and her late husband Alvin (who died in 2005) moved to Downey in 1951 and raised their four children here. Tuohino continues to live in the family home. She worked as a school psychometrist, psychologist and director of special education in Southern California school districts, including at Downey Unified. She served as education chair of the Downey PTA Council and is an honorary lifetime member. At Christ Lutheran, Tuohino taught Sunday school, served as director of Vacation Bible School, sang in choir, and was instrumental in founding the child care center. She also led and hosted five exchanges with German youth. Tuohino was also involved with Outdoor Ministries, and served on the board of Camp Yolijwa in the San Bernardino Mountains, on the National Outdoor Ministries board of the LCA, and the board of Lutheran Camping in Southern California. Camp Yolijwa honored Tuohino and her husband a few years ago at which time Rev. Jim Kniseley, a former camp board member, said, "Jean is best remembered as the driving force behind the construction of Luther Glen, the adult conference center at Camp Yolijwa. It was Jean's vision and continuing commitment that led to the decision to go ahead and build."
