The Makaha Sons opening Hawaiian concert series at Downey Theatre
DOWNEY – The Makaha Sons, known internationally for their commitment to keeping traditional Hawaiian music alive, will perform at the Downey Theatre on Friday, Oct. 20.
The concert is one of four performances comprising the Aloha Everywhere Concert Series, presented by Hawaiian Island Creations.
The other concerts include Robert Cazimero on Jan. 28; The Dennis Kamakahi Music Festival on April 7; and Mark Yamanaka, Kupaoa and Hoku Zuttermeister on May 18.
Boasting a catalog of 22 albums, The Makaha Sons’s melodious symphonies have resonated in concert halls around the globe. They have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and before the President and Vice President in Hawaii. The group tours internationally, with performances in Mexico, Canada and Japan.
The group is comprised of Jerome Koko as frontman, vocals and 12-string guitar; Kimo Artis on vocals and electric bass; and Hanale Ka’anapu on vocals and 6-string guitar.
The trio has been described as “a blend of melodic intricacies, syrupy boldness of harmonies, and of vibrant musical Hawaiian storytelling.”
They have earned numerous Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2013, the group was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.
