Teen athlete from Rancho Los Amigos competing in Paris Paralympics
DOWNEY — The 2024 Paris Paralympics kicked off this week, and Arelle Middleton, a standout young athlete from Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, will represent the USA on the world stage.
At just 16 years old, Middleton is one of the youngest members of the U.S. Paralympic Team. She will compete in the F64 classification for shot put and discus, a category designated for athletes with limb deficiencies and leg length discrepancies.
Middleton's athletic prowess extends well beyond track and field thanks to her time at Rancho Los Amigos. She has been actively participating in the Rancho Halos Wheelchair Sports Program (wheelchair basketball) for years and has excelled in tennis and volleyball as well.
The wheelchair sports program is funded by the Rancho Los Amigos Foundation (501c3 nonprofit) through generous support from organizations such as Las Floristas. Thanks to these philanthropic efforts, children and adults who have suffered a life altering spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, or neurological disorder have opportunities like Middleton to achieve independence and follow their dreams.
Arelle's journey in track and field began at Los Osos High School, where she first showcased her exceptional talent. During her freshman year, she won the 2023 CIF State Championship in the ambulatory shot put, setting a CIF State record with a throw of 39 feet 5.25 inches. Her achievements earned her a spot on the 2023 U.S. Paralympics Track and Field High School All-American Team.
Don't miss the chance to cheer for Arelle Middleton as she competes in the following events:
• September 1: Women's Discus Throw
• September 5: Women's Shot Put
Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center is incredibly proud of Arelle and wishes her the best of luck at the Games. For more information on how to watch the Paralympics, check your local TV listings or streaming services, and visit the Paralympics website for additional details.
