Students hold mock council meeting, learn about City Hall

Seventeen local teens toured City Hall last week as part of Downey Student Government Day, now in its second year and sponsored by the Downey Youth Commission and the city's Parks and Recreation department. Students representing Downey, Warren, Columbus, St. Joseph's and Cantwell high school participated in the program, and prepared questions to ask city council members and staff. Students were divided into five groups and asked various questions regarding personal and professional development.

Each group was assigned a laptop to prepare notes for their presentation at a mock city council meeting.

Student Government Day is designed to provide young adults the opportunity to interact with local government leaders while learning how the various City Hall departments play a role in maintaining the quality of life for Downey residents.
