Student earns $1K scholarship

DOWNEY - Downey resident Daisy Vasquez has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the California Grocers Association.Vasquez, who volunteered in the Downey Unified School District's ASPIRE after-school program, will attend Cerritos College this fall and major in liberal arts and social sciences. The scholarship was awarded on the basis of academic merit, evidence of outstanding character and leadership potential. The California Grocers Association's educational foundation awarded 258 scholarships totaling a record $341,250. "We are proud to award college scholarships to these deserving students," said Ronald Fong, president of the foundation. "We are encouraged by their desire, drive and determination to obtain a higher education and are grateful to assist in that cause." The scholarships are open to college students who are either employees or dependents of employees of California Grocers Association member companies.
