Stauffer Foundation awards nearly $300K in scholarships
DOWNEY – More than 650 high school students at Downey Unified schools were awarded nearly $300,000 in merit awards and scholarships on May 1.
Due to continuing Covid-19 protocols, most awards could not be presented at an auspicious event. However, some were presented in-person.
Additionally, the foundation is honoring each student in this week’s Downey Patriot. You are encouraged to personally congratulate the students you know.
$2,500 Community College Scholarship: Over 100 seniors applied. Consideration for winner selection included an essay, resume, interview, number of days absent, and counselor’s recommendation.
$100 Scholar Athlete: Over 350 students 9th-12th grade who participated in varsity sports while maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or better earned this award. The 16 seniors at each high school who had the highest GPA were awarded the $250 Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete Award.
$100 Jr 4.0: Nearly 250 11th grade students who had a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or better earned this award.
$15,000 California Lutheran University Scholarship: No applications were received this year.
The foundation is proud to continue these traditional awards for over 25 years and would be unable to do so without the countless hours of our dedicated volunteers.
With the passing of our dear founder, Dr. Mary Stauffer, in February, the Foundation looks forward to continuing her memory in perpetuity and is sponsoring a Celebration of Life for her August 28, 2021.
