Sports Briefs: Warren soccer teams eyeing league titles

Soccer standout Estela Sanchez signed a scholarship offer Wednesday to play at UC Santa Barbara. Estela, a senior at Warren High, was named to the Press-Telegram’s Dream Team last year. She was named Freshman of the Year at Warren in 2012.

DOWNEY – The Warren High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 12-5-2 and are 4-1-2 in league play. The Bears defeated Lynwood at Warren 2-1 on 1/26 and were defeated by Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on 1/28 in their much anticipated rematch.

Warren defeated Gahr at Warren 3-0 on Tuesday and played Downey at Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time). Warren will conclude their regular season against Dominguez at Warren next Tuesday and will travel to Lynwood next Thursday.  

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 16-2-3 and are 7-0 in league play. The Lady Bears defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 4-0 on 1/26 and defeated Paramount at Warren 3-0 on 1/28.

Warren defeated Gahr at Gahr 8-0 on Tuesday and traveled to cross-town rival Downey yesterday (score unavailable at press time) for their much anticipated rematch with the Lady Vikings.

If Warren defeated Downey on Wednesday, the Lady Bears will most likely be the outright league champion and earn the top S.G.V.L. seed in the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. If Downey defeated Warren, there will most likely be a co-championship and Downey will earn the number one S.G.V.L. seed due to the second round tiebreaker criteria. Both teams have two games remaining against teams they should defeat. 

The Lady Bears will conclude their regular season when they travel to Dominguez next Tuesday and host Lynwood next Thursday.

The Downey High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 10-5-6 and are 6-1 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Vikings defeated Paramount at Paramount 4-0 last Tuesday and defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 6-0 last Thursday.

Downey defeated Lynwood at Downey 4-0 on Tuesday and hosted cross-town rival Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time). The game against the Lady Bears yesterday most likely determined the league champion. If Warren won, they are S.G.V.L. champions outright. If Downey won, they are co-S.G.V.L. champions because Warren won the first game at Downey 1-0 on 1/19. 

As far as playoff seedings go, if Warren won they are the top S.G.V.L. seed in the Division 3 playoffs. If Downey won, they will earn the number one S.G.V.L. seed in the Division 3 playoffs due to the second round win tiebreaker criteria. 

As a formality, the Lady Vikings need to win their final two games of the regular season. Downey will conclude their regular season when they travel to Gahr on Tuesday and when they host Paramount next Thursday. Downey defeated Gahr 3-1 on 1/21 at Downey and defeated Paramount 4-0 on 1/26 at Paramount.  

The C.I.F. Division 3 playoff brackets will be revealed next weekend. Downey hopes to finish their league season strong, earn a co-S.G.V.L. championship, earn the number one S.G.V.L. seed and host a first round playoff game. Coach Fresquez, her staff and players are looking forward to the end of the regular season and start of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs.

The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 15-7 and are 4-2 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Vikings defeated Paramount at Downey 53-13 last Wednesday and defeated Dominguez at Downey 77-18 last Friday. 

Downey traveled to Lynwood on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) and will host cross-town rival Warren tonight. Downey was defeated by Lynwood 49-45 in their first meeting at Downey on 1/15 and was also defeated by Warren 48-38 in their first meeting on 1/20 at Warren.

Downey will conclude their regular season when they host Gahr next Wednesday and when they travel to Paramount next Friday. Downey defeated Gahr at Gahr 44-28 in their first meeting on 1/22 and defeated Paramount at Downey 53-13 on 1/27. 

Coach Harris, hist staff and players are looking forward to the end of league play and the start of the playoffs. The C.I.F. Division 1AA brackets will be released next weekend. 

Freshman standout point guard Surie Camacho continues to play well for the Lady Vikings. Camacho is averaging 9.5 points per game, 4.1 assists per game and 2.4 rebounds per game. 
Junior Lynette Garcia is averaging 8.1 ppg, 1.9 apg and 4 rpg and junior Danise Herrington is averaging 8.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg and 1.1 apg. Coach Harris will have 16 of 21 players returning next season. The future certainly looks bright for the Downey High School girls’ basketball team.

The third rotation of middle school sports features basketball for boys’ and girls’ and boys’ soccer. 

There are six basketball teams competing. A sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys’ team and a sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls’ team. There is also an eighth grade boys’ soccer team competing (varsity) as well as a sixth and seventh grade boys’ soccer team competing (junior varsity).

The midway point has been reached and several teams have taken early leads in their respective standings. In eighth grade boys’ basketball Griffiths is 2-1, Stauffer is 2-1, Sussman is 2-1 and Doty is 0-3. In seventh grade boys’ basketball Sussman is 3-0, Doty is 2-1, Stauffer is 1-2 and Griffiths is 0-3. In sixth grade boys’ basketball Doty is 3-0, Sussman is 2-1, Stauffer is 1-2 and Griffiths is 0-3.

In eighth grade girls’ basketball Doty is 2-1, Griffiths is 2-1, Stauffer is 2-1 and Sussman is 0-3. In seventh grade girls’ basketball Doty is 3-0, Stauffer is 2-1, Sussman is 1-2 and Griffiths is 0-3. In sixth grade girls’ basketball Doty is 3-0, Griffiths is 2-1, Stauffer is 1-2 and Sussman is 0-3.

In varsity boys’ soccer Griffiths is 2-1, Sussman is 2-1, Doty is 1-1-1, Stauffer is 0-2-1. In junior varsity boys’ soccer Doty is 3-0, Stauffer is 2-1, Griffiths is 1-2 and Sussman is 0-3.

Games will conclude next week when Sussman travels to Doty and Stauffer travels to Griffiths on Tuesday and when Stauffer travels to Doty and Sussman travels to Griffiths on Thursday. The fourth rotation of baseball and softball will follow once basketball and boys’ soccer concludes.
