SPORTS BRIEFS: Warren High boys soccer wins SGLV title

DOWNEY – The Warren High School boys’ soccer team finished their regular season with an overall record of 20-2-2 and a S.G.V.L. record of 9-0-1. The Bears are the 2015 San Gabriel Valley League champions. Paramount (14-6-2, 7-1-2) finished second in league play and Downey (13-9-2, 4-5-1) finished third. Downey defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 1-0 on 2/11 to secure the third league playoff entry. Warren, Paramount and Downey all compete in C.I.F. Division 1.

Warren will host Ventura (8-10-2, 1-6) later today at Warren. Ventura is an at-large entry from the Channel League. Paramount will host Alemany (8-6-5, 6-5-1). Alemany is the number three entry from the Mission League. Downey will travel to Bellflower to play St. John Bosco (10-7-8). St. John Bosco is the number two entry from the Trinity League.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team finished their regular season with an overall record of 17-3-3 and a S.G.V.L. record of 8-1-1. The Lady Bears are the 2015 San Gabriel Valley League champions. Downey finished second in league play (9-5-6, 7-2-1) and Paramount (14-6-1, 7-3) finished third. Warren, Downey and Paramount all compete in C.I.F. Division 3.

Warren hosted Knight yesterday (13-9, 10-4, score unavailable at press time). Knight was the number three entry from the Golden League. Downey traveled to Brea-Olinda (13-8-3, 3-3-1) yesterday. Brea-Olinda was the number two entry from the North Hills League (score unavailable at press time).

Paramount defeated Silverado 1-0 (8-11-4, 7-4-1) at Paramount on Tuesday in a wildcard game. Silverado was the number three entry from the Desert Sky League. With a victory against Silverado Tuesday, Paramount traveled to play Golden League champion Quartz Hill yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

The Warren High School girls’ basketball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-10 and a S.G.V.L. record of 8-2. The Lady Bears finished second in league play behind league champion Lynwood (14-8, 10-0).

Cross-town rival Downey finished third in league play with an overall record of 15-11 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-4.

Warren was defeated by Lynwood at Warren 63-43 on 2/10 and defeated Paramount 65-33 at Warren last Thursday night to wrap up league play. The Lady Bears will host La Quinta (13-13, 8-4) tomorrow night in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs.

The Warren High School boys’ basketball team saw their season come to an end last Thursday night with a 65-35 loss to Paramount at Warren. The Bears finished their regular season with an overall record of 6-17 and a S.G.V.L. record of 2-8.

The Warren High School girls’ water polo team finished their regular season with an overall record of 9-15 and a S.G.V.L. record of 4-1. Warren is ranked eighth in the latest Division 4 poll. The Lady Bears qualified for the C.I.F. playoffs by finishing second in league play behind newly crowned league champion Cerritos (18-11, 5-0). St. Joseph’s (20-7, 3-2) of Lakewood took third place in S.G.V.L. play and earned a Division 4 wildcard entry. The Lady Jesters defeated Pasadena 12-9 on Tuesday and traveled to Coastal Canyon League champion Royal yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

Warren traveled to Crescenta Valley (25-2, 6-0) yesterday (score unavailable at press time) to play the Lady Falcons. Crescenta Valley is ranked seventh in the latest Division 4 poll and are the 2015 Pacific League champions. Interestingly, Warren defeated Crescenta Valley 16-9 in last year’s semifinal game before losing to Riverside Poly 15-10 in the Division 5 final.

The Downey High School boys’ basketball team finished their regular season with an overall record of 18-8 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-4. The Vikings finished third in league play behind league champion Gahr (21-6, 9-1) and second place finisher Lynwood (19-7, 8-2).

Gahr hosted Irvine (11-16, 3-7) Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3-A playoffs. Lynwood will host Lakeside (13-13, 4-6) later today in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 2-A playoffs. Irvine is an at-large entry from the Pacific Coast League and Lakeside is an at-large entry from the Sun Belt League.

Downey will travel to 14th seeded San Clemente (18-7, 8-0) later today in the opening round of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs. The San Clemente Tritons are the 2015 South Coast League champions.

Lynwood will host Diamond Bar (11-14, 4-6) and Warren will host La Quinta (13-13, 8-4) tomorrow night in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs. Diamond Bar is an at-large entry from the Palomares League and La Quinta is the number three entry from the Desert Valley League.

Downey will travel to ninth seeded Great Oak (14-8, 7-3) tomorrow night.

Downey was defeated by Paramount 2-1 at Downey on 2/9 and defeated Dominguez 1-0 at Dominguez on 2/11 to secure the third league playoff entry.

Downey will travel to Bellflower to play St. John Bosco (10-7-8) later today in their C.I.F. Division 1 first round game. St. John Bosco is the number two entry from the Trinity League. Downey would face the winner of the El Toro/Peninsula game next Wednesday if they can get a result against the Braves.

Downey finished second in league play behind cross-town rival Warren (17-3-3, 8-1-1). Paramount (14-6-1, 7-3) finished third. Downey defeated Paramount at Paramount 3-1 on 2/9 and closed their league season with a 3-0 win against Dominguez at Downey on 2/11.

Downey traveled to Brea-Olinda (13-8-3, 3-3-1) yesterday in their C.I.F. Division 3 first round game. Brea-Olinda was the number two entry from the North Hills League (score unavailable ).

Downey would face the winner of the Pasadena Poly/Diamond Ranch game next Tuesday if they win.
