Sports Briefs: Warren beats Downey in OT for league title

DOWNEY – The Warren High School girls’ soccer team clinched the 2016 S.G.V.L. championship with their 2-1 overtime win against cross-town rival Downey at Warren last Thursday night. 

Warren’s goals were scored by standout striker Estela Sanchez and Jennifer Cortez.
Sanchez, who recently signed her letter of intent to play soccer at UCSB, has scored 26 goals this season and has assisted on six others. Sanchez has 8 goals and two assists in league play. 

The Lady Bears currently have an overall record of 18-2-3 and are 9-0 in league play. Warren defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 7-1 on Monday and hosted Lynwood on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) to conclude their regular season schedule.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Warren (18-2-3, 9-0) is in first, Downey (11-6-6, 7-2) is in second, Paramount (12-7-1, 6-3) is in third, Lynwood (8-8-3, 4-5) is in fourth, Gahr (5-14-1, 1-8) is in fifth and Dominguez (1-9-1, 0-9) is in sixth.

Interestingly, Warren is ranked 75th nationally, 29th in California, 21st in the Southern Section and second in Division 3. South Hills of West Covina (17-1-5) is currently ranked first in Division 3. 

The C.I.F. Division 3 playoff brackets will be released this weekend and Warren will be the top S.G.V.L. seed. As a result of their strong league season, the Lady Bears will host a first round playoff game against either a third place team from another league or an at-large entry.
Coach Dussan, her staff and players are looking forward to the start of the C.I.F. Divison 3 playoffs and making a deep run to win the title.

The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 17-9 and are 2-7 in S.G.V.L. play. 

Downey was defeated by Lynwood at Lynwood 51-39 last Wednesday and defeated cross-town rival Warren 54-53 last Friday night in double overtime. 

Downey concluded their regular season this week by defeating Gahr at Downey 73-67 on Tuesday and played their last game against Paramount at Paramount yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

As of Wednesday afternoon, Lynwood (18-5, 8-1) is in first, Dominguez (16-8, 5-3) is in second, Gahr (15-10, 5-4) is in third, Warren (13-11, 3-5) is in fourth, Paramount (10-17, 3-6) is in fifth and Downey (17-9, 2-7) is in sixth.

The Downey High School wrestling team was defeated by Mayfair 44-15 in the 2016 C.I.F. Western Division Dual Meet Final at Millikan High School last Saturday. 

Downey was the 2016 San Gabriel Valley League champion and the 2015 defending Western Division Dual Meet champion entering the competition. 

Downey defeated John Glenn in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Downey defeated Lakewood 42-31 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the Vikings narrowly defeated San Marino on criteria 36-36 (5-4 on pins) to advance to the final. Downey fell to Millikan 44-15 in the final and earned C.I.F. Western Division Runner-Up Honors.

On the Mayfair side of the bracket, the Monsoons defeated La Canada 75-6 in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. Mayfair then defeated Santa Fe 59-13 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semi-finals. The Monsoons defeated host-school Millikan 31-27 in the semi-finals to advance to the final against the Vikings.

In the final, Mayfair led 22-3 through six matches. Downey cut the lead to 22-12 after three straight wins. Through nine matches it was still a close dual at 22-12. The Vikings only managed one more win in five matches as the Monsoons pulled away late to seal the win.
San Gabriel Valley League Finals will be held tomorrow, C.I.F. Individuals will be held next weekend (2/19-20), the Masters Meet will be held the following weekend (2/26-27) in Ontario and the state meet will be held the following weekend (3/4-5) in Bakersfield.

The Warren High School wrestling team saw their dual meet season come to an end in the first round of the C.I.F. Western Division Dual Meet championships against Del Rio League champion Santa Fe at Millikan High School last Saturday. 

Warren finished their season with an overall dual meet record of 17-4 and were 3-1 in San Gabriel Valley League competition. Cross-town rival Downey was the 2016 league champion. Downey fell to Mayfair 44-15 in the C.I.F. Western Division Final.

Warren was defeated by Downey 51-15 on 1/7, defeated Dominguez 81-0 on 1/14, defeated Paramount 38-24 on 1/28 and defeated Gahr 49-18 on 2/2. Warren standout wrestler Gabriel Rodriguez (170) has an excellent opportunity to advance in the upcoming postseason competitions.

The Warren High School girls’ basketball program is putting together two upcoming basketball camps. The first camp is the #INSPIREHER Basketball Academy and the second camp is the Elevate LA Club Women’s Basketball.

The INSPIREHER Basketball Academy will be held Feb. 21, March 20, April 17, May 22 and June 19. Camp is for student-athletes ages 6-12 and will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Warren High School Gym. 

The cost is $50 and will be $60 on the day of the workout. Team discounts are available. Bring a basketball and appropriate workout attire. For more information contact Zaiid at (310) 753-3706.

Elevate LA Club Women’s Basketball will have tryouts on March 13 from 5-7 p.m. in the Warren High School Gym. All ages are welcome. The club season starts in April.
