Sports Briefs: Teams preparing for start of league play

DOWNEY – The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 14-2 and will begin league play next Wednesday at Dominguez. 

Downey defeated California High at Downey 60-45 on Tuesday night and will travel to Sunny Hills later today in their last preseason game.

Downey won their Division at the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs over the Christmas Break. Downey defeated King 45-38 on 12/26, defeated Rincon/University of Tuscon 66-56 on 12/28, defeated Simi Valley 73-52 on 12/29 and defeated Capistrano Valley 51-34 on 12/30 in the championship game. 

The Vikings will host Lynwood on 1/15, will travel to cross-town rival Warren on 1/20, will travel to Gahr on 1/22 and will host Paramount on 1/27.

The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 10-4 and will begin league play next Wednesday at Dominguez. Downey finished the Maxpreps Holiday Tournament (12/26-30) with a record of 3-1.

The Lady Vikings played Mater Dei at Mater Dei on Tuesday and finished their preseason schedule against Schurr at Downey yesterday (scores unavailable at press time).

The Lady Vikings will host Lynwood on 1/15, will travel to cross-town rival Warren on 1/20, will travel to Gahr on 1/22 and will host Paramount on 1/27. Lynwood and Warren will once again be the teams to beat in S.G.V.L. play.    

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 15-12 and a S.G.V.L. record of 6-4. The Lady Vikings were defeated by Great Oak 47-38 at Great Oak in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs. Coach Harris, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of league play.

The Downey High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 2-3-5 and have not begun S.G.V.L. play yet. 

The Lady Vikings competed in the Best in the West Tournament as a host school from 12/12-19. Downey finished their tournament with a record of 1-2-1.

The Lady Vikings tied Grand Terrace 3-3 on 12/12 at 9:30 a.m. and were defeated by Vista Murrieta 5-0 at 3:20 p.m. the same day. Downey tied Newport Harbor 2-2 on 12/18 and resumed the Best in the West Tournament by defeating Redlands 2-1 at 9:30 a.m. on 12/19 and were defeated by Canyon 2-0 at 2:00 p.m. on the same day.

Downey tied Bellflower at Bellflower 1-1 on 12/28 and tied Pacifica 1-1 on 12/29. The Lady Vikings traveled to Valley Christian on Tuesday and hosted the Lady Crusaders on Wednesday (scores unavailable at press time). 

Downey traveled to St. Joseph’s on 1/7 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play against Dominguez at Downey next Tuesday. The Lady Vikings will travel to Lynwood on 1/14, will host Gahr on 1/21 and will travel to Paramount on on 1/26.

Downey finished last season with an overall record of 9-7-6 and were defeated by Brea-Olinda 2-0 in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 3 playoffs. Downey was the S.G.V.L. co-champion with cross-town rival Warren. Both schools finished league play with 8-1-1 records. Downey tied Warren at Warren 1-1 and was defeated by Warren at Downey 2-0. Warren tied Downey 1-1 at Warren and was defeated by Paramount at Paramount 2-0. 

Coach Fresquez, her staff and players are looking forward to the start of league play. Warren will once again be the team to beat in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Warren High School boys’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 5-4 and have not begun league play yet. 

The Bears competed in the Oceanside-Southern California Classic Tournament over the Christmas Break and finished the tournament 1-1. Warren defeated Chula Vista 2-1 on 12/29 and were defeated by San Pasqual of Escondido 2-1 on 12/30 in the semifinal round.

Warren will conclude it’s preseason schedule against Katella (6-1-2) at Warren later today. The Bears will begin S.G.V.L. play against Paramount at Warren next Tuesday. Warren will travel to Gahr on 1/14, will travel to Dominguez on 1/21 and will host Lynwood on 1/26.

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 23-3-2 and a S.G.V.L. record of 9-0-1. Warren is the 2015 defending league champion. The Bears were eliminated by Edison 1-1 (5-4 on PK’s) in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 8-2-3 and will begin S.G.V.L. play next Tuesday against Paramount at Paramount. The Lady Bears tied Ocean View 1-1 at Ocean View on Tuesday in their last preseason game. 

Warren will host Gahr on 1/14, will host Dominguez on 1/21 and will travel to Lynwood on 1/26. Downey will once again be the team to beat in league play. Warren finished last season with an overall record of 18-4-3 and a league record of 8-1-1. Downey and Warren were 2015 co-S.G.V.L. champions.

The Warren High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 9-5 and have not begun S.G.V.L. play yet. The Bears finished the Maxpreps Holiday Tournament (12/26-30) with a record of 3-1. 

Warren also competed in the 2nd Annual Massey Classic against Cabrillo of Long Beach and Long Beach Wilson. Warren was defeated by Cabrillo 63-55 on 1/2 and defeated Long Beach Wilson 53-42 on 1/4. The Bears traveled to La Salle of Pasadena on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) and will host Renaissance Academy of Altadena tomorrow at 3 p.m. 
Warren will begin S.G.V.L. play when they host Paramount next Wednesday. The Bears will travel to Gahr on 1/15, will host cross-town rival Downey on 1/20, will travel to Dominguez on 1/22 and will host Lynwood on 1/27. 

Warren finished last season with an overall record of 6-17 and did not qualify for postseason competition. Coach Morrison, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of the 2016 league season.

The Warren High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record 5-6 and have not begun S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Bears competed in the Larry Doyle/Dan Wiley Tournament of Champions (12/26-30) where they defeated Valenica 64-33 on 12/26 and were defeated by Edison 59-58 on 12/28.

The Lady Bears hosted Orange Lutheran on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to El Rancho to play the Lady Dons later today. Warren will begin S.G.V.L. play on 1/13 when they host Paramount. 

The Lady Bears will travel to Gahr on 1/15, will host cross-town rival Downey on 1/20, will travel to Dominguez on 1/22 and will host Lynwood on 1/27. Warren finished last season with an overall record of 17-11 and were 8-2 in S.G.V.L. play. The Lady Bears were defeated by Millikan at Millikan 75-63 in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1AA playoffs. 

Lynwood will once again be the team to beat in league play.
