Sports Briefs: Downey, Warren have 7 All-League selections

DOWNEY -- The 2015 San Gabriel Valley League All-League girls' volleyball selections have been released. Warren had four All-League selections, Gahr had three, Downey had three, Paramount had two and Lynwood had one.

Warren High School senior Miranda White was selected as the S.G.V.L. Player of the Year. White is an outside hitter who accumulated 277 kills, 211 digs, 57 aces and 16 blocks to lead the Lady Bears to the S.G.V.L. title.

Junior setter Vanessa Garcia, senior outside hitter Jasmine Palacios and senior libero Caitlyn Headley were also selected as All-S.G.V.L. selections.

Gahr High School senior opposite Tyra Parrish, junior middle blocker Zanache Stanton and senior setter Niahni Moultry were also selected as All-S.G.V.L. selections.

Downey High School senior outside hitter Bela Gamboa, senior libero Alejandra Mora and senior opposite Melanie Estanillo were also selected as All-S.G.V.L. selections.

Paramount High School junior opposite Selena Manriquez and junior middle blocker Cianna Andrews were also selected as All-S.G.V.L. selections as was Lynwood High School's senior middle blocker Alice Reyes.

Coach Scott Lane and his staff are extremely proud of this year's team and what they have accomplished. The Lady Bears finished the season with an overall record of 16-7 and were 9-1 in S.G.V.L. play. Warren defeated Estancia in the first round of the C.I.F. Division 2AA playoffs before being eliminated by Village Christian in the second round.

The Downey High School girls' basketball team currently has a record of 4-1 and will stay busy in December before league play starts in January. 

The Lady Vikings lost in the championship game of the 38th Annual Downey Varsity Classic to Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Montebello 49-40 on 12/3.

Downey defeated Hawthorne 52-34 in the first round of the Downey Classic. The Lady Vikings then defeated El Segundo 45-37 in the second round and defeated South Torrance 38-33 to advance to the championship game against C-SH.

In the Hawthorne game, the score was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. Downey outscored Hawthorne 17-4 in the second quarter and led 27-14 at halftime. Both teams scored 12 points in the third quarter and Downey led 39-26 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Vikings sealed the win by outscoring Hawthorne 13-8 in the fourth quarter and won 52-34.

Downey defeated Garfield at Garfield 53-50 on 12/8. In the Garfield game, Downey trailed 17-15 at the end of the first quarter but led 34-27 at halftime. Garfield outscored the Lady Vikings 14-7 in the third quarter and the score was tied at 41 entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Vikings outscored Garfield 12-9 in the fourth quarter and won the game 53-50. 

Coach Harris is pleased with how well his team has played thus far in the preseason. The Lady Vikings will begin S.G.V.L. play when they travel to Dominguez to face the Lady Dons on 1/13 and will then host Lynwood on 1/15. Downey will then travel to cross-town rival Warren to face the Lady Bears on 1/20.

The Warren High School boys' soccer team currently has a record of 4-3 and will begin S.G.V.L. play in January. The Bears have a busy preseason schedule and that will continue throughout December and the first part of January.

Warren defeated Artesia at Warren 3-2 on 11/23, were defeated by Los Alamitos at Los Alamitos 2-0 on 11/30, defeated Santa Margarita at Warren 1-0 on 12/2, were defeated by Edison at Edison 1-1 (4-2 on PK's) on 12/5, were defeated by Bell Gardens at Bell Gardens 2-0 on 12/8 and defeated El Dorado at Warren 5-1 on 12/10.

Warren traveled to La Mirada on Wednesday and defeated the Matadores 6-2. The Bears had two home games scheduled for yesterday against Long Beach Jordan and El Segundo (scores unavailable at press time) and will travel to Santa Ana Valley on 1/5. 

The Bears will host Katella on 1/8 and will begin S.G.V.L. play against Paramount at Warren on 1/12. Warren will travel to Gahr on 1/14, will host cross-town rival Downey on 1/19, will travel to Dominguez on 1/21 and will host Lynwood on 1/26. Paramount and cross-town rival Downey will once again provide tough competition for the Bears.

Coach Pena, his staff and players are looking forward to the start of the 2016 S.G.V.L. season. Warren finished last season with an overall record of 23-2-2 and were 9-0-1 in S.G.V.L. play. Warren was the 2015 S.G.V.L. champion. The Bears were defeated by Edison 1-1 (5-4 in PK's) in the second round of the C.I.F. Division 1 playoffs. Warren defeated Ventura 4-0 in the first round to advance.

The second rotation of middle school sports has concluded and five city championships have been claimed in boys' volleyball and girls' soccer.

In 8th grade boys' volleyball Doty finished 6-0 and claimed the city championship. Stauffer finished 3-3, Sussman finished 2-4 and Griffiths finished 1-5.

In 7th grade boys' volleyball Sussman finished 5-1 and claimed the city championship. Doty finished 4-2, Stauffer finished 2-4 and Griffiths finished 1-5.

In 6th grade boys' volleyball Griffiths finished 6-0 and claimed the city championship. Doty finished 4-2, Stauffer finished 2-4 and Sussman finished 0-6.

In varsity girls' soccer Stauffer finished 6-0 and claimed the city championship. Doty finished 4-2, Sussman finished 1-4-1 and Griffiths finished 0-5-1.

In junior varsity girls' soccer Doty finished 5-1 and claimed the city championship. Griffiths finished 4-1-1, Stauffer finished 2-3-1 and Sussman finished 0-6.

The third rotation of middle school sports will begin January 26th and feature eight different teams competing for city championships in boys' and girls' basketball and boys' soccer. There will be basketball teams for 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls and varsity (8th grade) and junior varsity (6th and 7th grade) boys' soccer teams.

Through two sports rotations, Doty has won five city championships, Stauffer has won four, Griffiths has won two and Sussman has won one.
