SPORTS BRIEFS: Downey beats Dominguez to stay .500 in league

DOWNEY – The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 15-7 and a S.G.V.L. record of 3-3. Downey was defeated by Lynwood 56-50 at Downey on 1/30 and defeated Dominguez at Downey 84-58 on Monday. Downey traveled to cross-town rival Warren on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) for their much anticipated rematch with the Bears.

Downey will conclude their regular season by traveling to Gahr later today, hosting Paramount next Tuesday and by traveling to Dominguez next Thursday.

The Vikings are looking to finish their regular season strong and on a winning note. The C.I.F. playoffs are within reach with a strong league finish.

The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 12-10 and a S.G.V.L. record of 3-3. Downey defeated Dominguez at Downey 55-17 on 1/28 and were defeated by Lynwood at Lynwood 26-19 on 1/30.

Downey traveled to cross-town rival Warren on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time).

The Lady Vikings will travel to Gahr later today to face the Lady Gladiators, will host Paramount next Tuesday and conclude their regular season next Thursday against Dominguez at Dominguez.

Downey is looking for a strong league finish and a spot in the C.I.F. playoff bracket.

The Warren High School boys’ soccer team improved to 17-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play after defeating Downey at Warren 2-0 on Tuesday. Warren traveled to Dominguez yesterday to take on the Dons (score unavailable).

The Bears will host Lynwood on Monday and Paramount (12-5-2, 5-0-2) next Wednesday. Wednesday’s game against Paramount will be for the S.G.V.L. championship.

The Warren High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 5-14 and a S.G.V.L. record of 1-5. Warren was defeated by Paramount at Paramount 72-55 on 1/28 and by Gahr at Gahr 66-45 last Friday. Warren played cross-town rival Downey at Warren Wednesday night (score unavailable at press time).

Warren has three games left on their schedule. The Bears will close out league play with a game tonight against Dominguez at Dominguez, a game against Lynwood at Warren next Tuesday and their finale against Paramount at Warren next Thursday. Warren is looking forward to finishing their season on a high note with a win.

The Warren High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 13-9 and a S.G.V.L. record of 5-1. The Lady Bears defeated Paramount at Paramount 82-33 on 1/28 and defeated Gahr at Gahr 62-38 on 1/31.

The Lady Bears traveled to Dominguez yesterday (score unavailable at press time), will host Lynwood next Tuesday and will travel to Paramount for their league finale next Thursday. The game against Lynwood next Tuesday will decide the S.G.V.L. title.

The Warren High School girls’ soccer team defeated cross-town rival Downey 2-0 at Downey on Tuesday night.

Warren came into Tuesday’s game with an overall record of 15-2-3 and 5-0-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play. Downey came into Tuesday’s game with an overall record of 7-4-6 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 5-0-1. Something had to give as both teams clashed for city bragging rights.

With the win, Warren improved to 16-2-3 overall and 6-0-1 in league play. With the loss, Downey falls to 7-5-6 overall and 5-1-1 in league play. Warren now has the inside track to the S.G.V.L. title with only three games left to play.

Warren striker Estella Sanchez got the Lady Bears on the scoreboard with a shot past diving Downey goalkeeper Idalis Gonzalez in the 17th minute. The score at halftime was 1-0 Warren. The score stayed that way until late in the second half when Lady Bear sophomore Viviana Garcia scored Warren’s second goal with seven minutes left in regulation. There were three minutes added in extra time with neither team scoring.

Warren head coach Liliana Dussan was extremely proud of how hard her team played. Warren played Downey to a 1-1 tie a few weeks ago at home after Downey scored the equalizer goal late. Warren’s 2-0 victory on Tuesday may have ended Downey’s decade-long dominance in San Gabriel Valley League play.

Warren hosted Dominguez yesterday and Downey traveled to St. Margaret’s on Wednesday (scores unavailable).

Middle school sports continued this week with games on Tuesday. Griffiths traveled to Doty and Sussman hosted Stauffer.

Doty took 6/8 games from Griffiths and Stauffer took 4/6 basketball games from Sussman while both the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams played to 0-0 ties and 2-2 on penalty kicks finals.

The Doty boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Griffiths 2-1. The Doty boys’ junior varsity team defeated Griffiths 3-1. The Griffiths boys’ eighth grade basketball team defeated Doty 48-15. The Griffiths boys’ seventh grade basketball team defeated Doty 37-17. The Doty boys’ sixth grade team defeated Grtiffiths 58-36.

The Doty girls’ basketball teams won on all three grade levels. The eighth grade girls won 37-5, the seventh grade girls won 44-11 and the sixth grade girls won 23-8.

The Stauffer and Sussman varsity and junior varsity soccer teams played to 0-0 draws and neither game was decided on penalty kicks. The Stauffer boys’ eighth grade basketball team defeated Sussman 32-20. The Stauffer boys’ seventh grade basketball team defeated Sussman 64-13. The Sussman boys’ sixth grade basketball team defeated Stauffer 41-33.

The Sussman girls’ eighth grade basketball team defeated Stauffer 30-10. The Stauffer girls’ seventh grade basketball teams defeated Sussman 54-6 and the Stauffer girls’ sixth grade basketball team defeated Sussman 27-10.

Doty played Sussman yesterday and Griffiths played Stauffer (scores unavailable at press time). Games will resume next Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. at predetermined sites.
