Sports Briefs: Doty wins Sports Championships Trophy

DOWNEY – As the middle school sports year has come to an end, the Downey Unified School District has begun the inaugural Sports Championships Trophy. 

The Sports Championships Trophy is given to the middle school with the most city championships throughout the school year. The four middle schools each compete in football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and track and field.

Doty earned the Sports Championships Trophy for the 2014-15 school year with 19 city championships. Sussman was second with five, Stauffer was third with four and Griffiths was fourth with three championships.

In the first rotation, Doty earned a co-championship in football with Stauffer, a co-championship in girls’ varsity volleyball with Sussman and an outright city championship in girls’ junior varsity volleyball. 

In the second rotation, Doty earned a co-championship in boys’ eighth grade volleyball with Sussman and a co-championship in seventh grade boys’ volleyball also with Sussman. Griffiths earned the sixth grade boys’ volleyball championship outright. Doty earned a co-championship with Griffith’s in varsity girls’ soccer and earned the city championship in girls’ junior varsity soccer outright.

In the third rotation, Doty earned three outright city championships in sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls’ basketball. Griffiths earned the city championship in eighth grade boys’ basketball outright. Stauffer earned the city championship in seventh grade boys’ basketball outright and Sussman earned the city championship in sixth grade boys’ basketball outright. Sussman earned the city championship in varsity boys’ soccer outright and Doty earned the city championship in junior varsity boys’ soccer outright. 

In the fourth rotation, Doty earned the city championship in varsity baseball outright and Stauffer earned the city championship in varsity softball outright. Doty earned the city championship in junior varsity softball outright and Stauffer won the city championship in junior varsity baseball outright. 

In the fifth and final rotation, Doty won all six track and field competitions for sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys and girls outright.

The Downey Unified School District middle school track and field championship was held on June 5, and all four Downey middle schools competed. Doty may have won the overall track meet, but several boy and girl athletes won individual events.

In eighth grade girl competition, Laura Velasco of Doty won the 1600m, Alexis Gonzalez of Doty won the 100 hurdles, R. Victoria of Sussman won the 100m, N. Carcamo of Stauffer won the 200m, Nydia Morales of Doty won the 400m, Laura Velasco of Doty won the 800m, M. Mordecia of Sussman won the high jump, N. Carcamo of Stauffer won the long jump, Surie Camacho of Doty won the shot put and Sussman won the 4X100m relay.  

In seventh grade girl competition, Dafne Rodriguez of Doty won the 1600m, P. Sanchez of Sussman won the 100 hurdles, Kaylie Lara of Doty won the 100m, P. Sanchez of Sussman won the 200m, Jazmin Orozco of Doty won the 400m, Dafne Rodriguez of Doty won the 800m, Jazmin Orozco of Doty won the high jump, Kayla Inzunza of Doty won the long jump, Amarah Gonzalez of Doty won the shot put and Doty won the 4X100m relay.

In sixth grade girl competition, Rachel Spinoza of Doty won the 1600m and 100 hurdles, Sara Luna of Doty won the 100m, T. Stephens of Stauffer won the 200m, Elizabeth Frias of Doty won the 400m, Juliet Sullivan of Doty won the 800m, Rachel Spinoza of Doty won the high jump, Alexa Munoz of Doty won the long jump, L. Lopez of Griffiths won the shot put and Doty won the 4X100m relay.

Vasquez of Sussman won the high jump, Robbie Colenzo of Doty won the long jump, Nelson Cruz of Doty won the shot put and Doty won the 4X100m relay.

In seventh grade boy competition, Chance Perkins of Doty won the 1600m, J. Simon of Sussman won the 110 hurdles, Clark Morales of Doty won the 100 and 200 meter sprints, Chance Perkins of Doty won the 400m, Julian Yepez of Doty won the 800m, J. Simon of Sussman won the high jump, Clark Morales of Doty won the long jump, N. Hernandez of Sussman won the shot put and Sussman won the 4X100m relay.

In sixth grade boy competition, Frank Alvarez of Doty won the 1600m, Jacob Skobis of Doty won the 110 hurdles, R. Zuniga of Sussman won the 100 and 200m sprints, X. Orozco of Sussman won the 400m, 800m and high jump, Uriah Gonzalez of Doty won the long jump, Nick Vargas of Doty won the shot put and Doty won the relay after Sussman crossed lanes and was disqualified.

The Downey High School boy’s soccer program will be starting its annual soccer camp June 29. The camp is open to boys of all ages and skill levels. 

If you are an incoming freshman or current student looking to make the Downey High School soccer team, this camp is for you. 

The camp will run for two weeks. The camp will run from June 29 to July 3 and July 6-10. Camp hours will be 8-10a.m. Workouts will be held at Allen Layne Stadium on the campus at Downey High School. Elementary, middle and high school student-athletes are welcome. The camp fee is $150.

The Downey High School girl’s lacrosse program will be starting its annual lacrosse camp Monday, June 29. The camp is open to girls of all ages and skill levels. 

The camp will run for five weeks, from June 29 to July 3, July 6-9, July 13-16, July 20-23 and July 27-30. Workouts will be held at Allen Layne Stadium on the campus at Downey High School.

Elementary, middle and high school student-athletes are welcome. The camp fee is $150.
