Sports Briefs: Doty, Stauffer big winners

DOWNEY – Middle school sports bagan their third rotation of games last Tuesday as Doty traveled to Stauffer and Griffiths traveled to Sussman to compete in boys’ soccer and boys’ and girls’ basketball. Doty took five out of eight competitions from Stauffer while Griffiths won six of eight competitions against Sussman.

The Doty boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Stauffer 2-1. The Doty boys’ junior varsity team defeated Stauffer by the same 2-1 score. The Stauffer boys’ basketball teams won at all three grade levels. The Spartan eighth grade boys won 29-18, the seventh grade boys won 58-21 and the sixth grade boys won 32-31.

The Doty girls’ basketball teams won at all three grade levels. The Lady Knight eighth grade girls won 40-3, the seventh grade girls won 40-23 and the sixth grade girls won 31-16.

The Sussman boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Griffiths 4-0. The Griffiths boys’ junior varsity team defeated Sussman 2-1. The Griffiths boys’ basketball teams won 2/3 grade level games. The Indian eighth grade boys won 61-14 and the seventh grade boys won 36-22. The Sussman sixth grade boys team won 41-32.

The Griffiths girls’ basketball teams won at all three grade levels. The Lady Indian eighth grade girls won 15-12, the seventh grade girls won 22-11 and the sixth grade girls won 26-8. Games will resume next Tuesday when Griffiths takes on Doty and Sussman takes on Stauffer. Games will begin at 2:15 p.m. at predetermined locations.

Warren High School hosted the third annual West Coast Bowl last Sunday featuring Team SPEED against TEAM IMPACT. Team SPEED was coached by former NFL receiver Matthew Hatchette and Team Impact was coached by former NFL receiver Terrell Owens.

Team SPEED held on for the 24-19 win with a defensive stop in the final minute of play. The West Coast Bowl featured 80 players from various high schools competing for the last time.

The Warren High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 5-12 and are 1-3 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

Warren defeated Dominguez at Warren 63-56 on 1/21 but lost to Lynwood at Lynwood 80-25 last Friday. Warren traveled to Paramount on Wednesday to play the Pirates (score unavailable) and will travel to Gahr later today to play the Gladiators.

Warren High’s girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 11-9 and are 3-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Lady Bears defeated Dominguez at Warren 60-9 on 1/21 but lost to Lynwood at Lynwood 53-45 last Friday. The Lady Bears traveled to Paramount on Wednesday to play the Lady Pirates (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to Gahr later today to play the Lady Gladiators.

Warren defeated Dominguez at Warren 1-0 on 1/20, defeated Lynwood at Lynwood 4-0 on 1/23 and tied Paramount 3-3 at Paramount Tuesday.

The Bears traveled to Gahr yesterday to play the Gladiators (score unavailable at press time).

The girls’ soccer team currently has an overall record of 13-2-3 and are 4-0-1 in San Gabriel Valley League play.

The Lady Bears defeated Dominguez at Dominguez 6-0 on 1/20, defeated Lynwood at Warren 9-0 on 1/22 and defeated Paramount at Warren 4-1 on Tuesday. The Lady Bears played Gahr at Warren yesterday (score unavailable at press time).

The cross-town rematch with Downey will be next Tuesday at Downey at 6:30 p.m.

The Downey High School boys’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 14-6 and a S.G.V.L. record of 2-2.

The Vikings were defeated by Gahr at Downey 67-47 on 1/21 and defeated Paramount at Paramount 53-36 on 1/23. Downey hosted Dominguez Wednesday night (score unavailable) and will host Lynwood this evening.

The Downey High School girls’ basketball team currently has an overall record of 11-9 and a S.G.V.L. record of 2-2.

The Lady Vikings defeated Gahr at Downey 59-36 on 1/21 and defeated Paramount at Paramount 46-24 on 1/23. Downey hosted Dominguez on Wednesday (score unavailable at press time) and will travel to Lynwood this evening to play the Lady Knights.

The Vikings were defeated at Paramount 2-0 on 1/22 and defeated Dominguez 5-2 on Tuesday. Downey hosted Lynwood yesterday (score unavailable at press time). Downey will travel to cross-town rival Warren next Tuesday for their much anticipated rematch.

In the Dominguez game, David Carrillo scored two goals, Bryan Majano scored one goal, Omar Juarez scored one goal and Robyn Ortega scored a goal. Marc Farias had four assists in the winning effort.

Coach Mires was pleased with his team’s effort against Dominguez and is looking forward to the second round of league play.

The Downey High School wrestling team finished in fifth place last Friday and Saturday at the Raul Huerta Memorial Individual Wrestling Tournament held at Canyon Springs High School.

Poway finished in first place with 361 points, Citrus Hill finished in second place with 192 points, Hemet finished tied for third place with Centennial at 179 points and Downey finished in fifth place with 145 points. Downey had four wrestlers place in the top eight of their respective weight classes.

Jonathan Prata (106) finished in seventh place after pinning Christian McComb of Vista at the 2:37 mark of the second period. Mark Lopez (113) finished in second place after being pinned by Manual Cano of Mount Miguel at the 1:25 mark of the first period.

Carlos Rivas (126) finished in third place after defeating Alexis Valdez of Norwalk 4-2. Dylan Moreno (152) finished in fourth place after being defeated by Marcus Casas of Rim of the World 9-8.

Downey wrestled Paramount at Paramount yesterday and will conclude their S.G.V.L. dual meet schedule next Tuesday against Dominguez at Downey. C.I.F. duals will be held on Feb. 7 and S.G.V.L. Finals will be held February 14th at Downey. Downey has the inside track to the 2015 S.G.V.L. title after defeating cross-town rival Warren 35-25 on Jan. 15.
