Son, grandson of former Dodgers GM Al Campanis to speak in Downey
Jimmy and Jimmy Jr. Campanis, the son and grandson of former L.A. Dodgers general manager Al Campanis, will be at the Rio Hondo Event Center this Wednesday, May 24, at 7 a.m. for a speaking engagement.
The event is hosted by Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis and is free and open to the public.
Campanis was the first greek player in MLB history, playing second base for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Montreal Royals.
He went on to become general manager of the Dodgers, serving from 1968 to 1987. In one of his first trades as general manager of the Dodgers, Campanis traded his own son, Jim, to the Kansas City Royals for two minor leaguers.
Under Campanis the Dodgers reached the World Series four times, in 1974, 1977, 1978 and 1981. They lost the first three of these, but finally won in 1981.
