Silent auction underway at library

DOWNEY – The Friends of the Downey City Library holds monthly silent auctions to raise money for library programs. April’s items include: “Baseball’s Greatest” (a set of four books: The Greatest Games, Greatest World Series, Greatest Ballparks and Greatest MVPs);

“Rush for Riches – Gold Fever and the Making of California” (the story of the gold rush from 1849-1884);

“Gone with the Wind” (a very thorough look- includes the book, the movie, the making of the movie, and even the Mammy’s story);

“The DK Illustrated Family Bible” (a visual approach to understanding the Bible);

“Killing Lincoln” and “Lincoln’s Last Days” (some of history’s most remarkable figures-two books and 6 CDs tell the story);

“Titanic and Her Sisters Olympic and Britannic” (a definitive account of these three beautiful ships with stories and pictures from their construction to the present day);

“Uppity Women of Shakespearean Times” (200 downright dangerous damsels who refused to button up or back down);

“Campbell’s Classic Recipes” (great meals in 20 minutes or less-classic recipes);

“The Universe and How to See It” (a practical guide to viewing and understanding the night sky);

“Jazz” (a film by Ken Burns shares the story of this art form in 10 VHS cassettes);

“Grandma Moses” (This work examines the art and personality of Anna Mary Robertson Moses);

“A Special Collection in Praise of Mothers” (a collection of thoughts and praise for mothers from more than 20 authors);

Books have opening bids from $5-$10. Bids can be made through noon, Saturday, April 25, on cards in the Friend’s Bookstore located in the young adult section of the library.
