Silent auction ends Saturday

DOWNEY – The Friends of the Downey City Library holds monthly silent book auctions in order to raise money to help support the various programs of our local library. This month the following items are up for bid:

Elvis Presley items include two books (“Elvis Remembered” and “The Private Life of Elvis”), two CD’s (“The Number One Hits and “50 Years-50 Hits”) and a 1979 Elvis calendar;

“Savoring Mexico” (William-Sonoma and Mary Tausend share an in-depth knowledge of Mexican food and culture plus recipes and beautiful photos);

“Metropolitan Jewelry” (a pictorial and informative tour of the Metropolitan Museum’s collection of jewelry from ancient times to modern cultures);

“Castle” (the construction of a medieval castle from concept to finish);

“Weird California” (a travel guide to California’s local legends and best kept secrets…haunted roads, famous graves sites and more);

“The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean” (art work from all three “Pirates” movies);

“Ultimate Autos-The Kings of Bling” (exotic supercars beautifully photographed in action and detail);

“The Trail Drivers of Texas” (a first-hand account of what it was like to be in the saddle for two or three months dodging lightening and longhorns);

“Carmen – Georges Bizet” (book includes the complete opera on two CD’s, the complete Libretto with annotations and critical historical commentary);

“The Beautiful Beetle Book: (crawl into the amazing world of beetles!);

“The Time of the Trolley” (a complete history of the “street car” with hundreds of pictures);

“The Best of James Herriot-Favourite Memories of a Country Vet” (selections from the author’s original books with additional materials by Reader’s Digest editors).

Books have opening bids from $5-$12 and are on display in the library lobby. Bids can be made through noon, Saturday, Jan. 31, on cards in the Friend’s Bookstore which is located in the young adult section of the library.
