Services planned for Gwen Egge

DOWNEY - Longtime Downey resident Gwendolyn (Gwen) Roberta Egge passed away quietly on Feb. 18 at age 93.The eldest of four daughters, she was born in Cloud Chief, Okla., on Oct. 14, 1919. At age six, Gwen and her family relocated to Long Beach and she lived in the local area the remainder of her life. She had been a Downey resident for 49 years. She met her husband, Edward Egge, while working as a bookkeeper for Sears, and they celebrated 65 years together. The couple raised two children, traveled to most of the United States and were members of the Bowling Squares and Square Pegs square dancing clubs. In 1955, the Egges founded Egge Marine Service in Long Beach. Gwen was involved in the business for more than 50 years. Predeceased by her husband in 2007, Gwen is survived by her sister Ruth; daughter Roberta (John); son Ed (Nancy); six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Downey United Methodist Church.
