Senator announces program for high school seniors
DOWNEY – State Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) has announced the launch of the 32nd Senate District Young Senators Leadership Program (YSLP) of 2015-16. The program provides high school seniors with the unique opportunity to learn about California government and the legislative process. Students will participate in a broad range of activities, including researching local issues, attending meetings with legislative staff, assisting constituents, and traveling to Sacramento for a mock legislative session in the State Capitol.
“The Young Senators Leadership Program is a unique opportunity for high school seniors to learn firsthand about California government and to serve our community,” said Mendoza. “I think it is important to provide opportunities for young people to learn about a career in public service. There is no better way than through the YSLP. I look forward to inspiring our next generation of leaders.”
Seniors who are selected for the program will work in Mendoza’s district office, attend 40 hours of civic engagement, identify and address a community issue, and travel to Sacramento to participate in a mock legislative session in the State Capitol.
Applicants must be incoming high school seniors for the 2015-16 school year and have an interest in government and public service. Applications are available by calling Mendoza’s office at (323) 890-2790 or at his website: http://sd32.senate.ca.gov/young-senators-leadership-program.
To submit the YSLP application, email it to Ana.Perez@sen.ca.gov, drop it off, or mail it to Mendoza’s district office at 400 N. Montebello Blvd., Suite 100 Montebello, CA 90640.
The deadline for submitting an application is June 30, 2015. Young Senators will be selected in July after a screening of all eligible applications.
The YSLP builds on Senator Mendoza’s Young Legislators Program that he created when he served in the State Assembly from 2006-12.
