School board votes to honor Ricky Galvez

DOWNEY – The Downey board of education unanimously voted Tuesday to rename the Law Enforcement Pathway at Downey High and the “O” hallway at Warren High in memory of fallen Downey police officer Ricky Galvez.

“Officer Galvez was a true role model to the youth in our community,” said board president D. Mark Morris. “This pathway and hallway will be something students can look to and emulate in the officer’s honor.

“He made a difference in our community and will forever make a difference in our students’ lives.”

Galvez was a 5-year veteran of the Downey Police Department and a resource officer at Warren High when he was killed during a robbery attempt Nov. 18, authorities said. He was 29.

Tuesday’s board meeting was attended by several members of the police department administration, including Capt. Dean Milligan and lieutenants Mark McDaniel, Scott Loughner and Alex Irizibal. Also in attendance was Galvez’s brother, Pedro Galvez.

The school district will announce dedication dates at a later time.
