Say 'no' to stimulus dollars

Dear Editor:Just because something is legal doesn't make it right. In Hitler's Germany, the law declared Jews as non-persons, but that didn't make it right. The Nurenberg trials proved that there was a Higher Law. Also, just because Congress last week passed the gigantic Stimulus Bill of 2009 and many cities and states are lining up to apply for their share of the handout does not mean that our city of Downey has to follow suit. If the citizens of Downey believe that this was the wrong bill to have passed then we should also keep our own house in order by demanding that our City Council resist the pressure of seeking stimulus dollars from the federal government when the federal government does not have any money of its own. The more money they print, the less freedom the states and local cities will have and Downey is no exception. Let Downey stand as an oasis of righteousness in a desert of ever-increasing federal power over all, by refusing to beg for stimulus dollars. In this way we can be an example to our youth that character truly counts. Yes, this may just be the defining battle of our day. If you think so, then join it. - Dan Cristea, Downey ********** Published: February 27, 2009 - Volume 7 - Issue 45
