Russian National Ballet's 'Sleeping Beauty' coming to Downey
DOWNEY – The Russian National Ballet is once again bringing the joy, beauty, and magic of “The Sleeping Beauty” to The Downey Civic Theatre for one performance only, Feb. 14, Valentines Day.
Last year’s performance by the well-known ballet troupe almost sold out, and was so successful, Theatre management is bringing them back for an encore.
“The Sleeping Beauty” is often considered one of the finest achievements of the classical ballet. It’s 1890 debut, in St. Petersburg, Russia was a spectacular illustration of the Russian Imperial style at its zenith. Today it remains the cornerstone of The Russian National Ballet Theatre’s repertory.
The current staging is directed by Elena Radchenko. With its large cast, fairytale settings, lavish sets, and glorious Tchaikovsky score, “The Sleeping Beauty” remains the very essence of classical balletic grandeur, with all the elements of an enduring fairy tale: romance, poetry, fate, goodness versus evil, and of course, love.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance starts at 8. For tickets, call the box office at (562) 861-8211 or go to downeytheatre.org.
