PTA HELPS

Dear Editor: The ladies of the Downey Council PTA H.E.L.P.S. (Health, Education, Local Pantry Service) wish to say thank you to all who attended their annual volunteer luncheon, which was held on April 16, in the HELPS Room at Apollo Park.

More than 65 members of the Downey community came and enjoyed the homemade dishes and desserts that were served. The luncheon is held every year to say thank you to all of the donors, organizations and civic leaders who support the HELPS program.

The HELPS food pantry is a unit of the Downey Council PTA, and donates packaged and canned food items to students of the Downey Unified School District and their families, as well as members of the Downey community, who need assistance in keeping food on their table. The program serves hundreds of families throughout the year and hundreds more during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The program is run by volunteer retired former teachers and principals of the Downey school system, as well as mothers and grandmothers of Downey students. It is supported entirely by donations.

For further information, you may contact the director of HELPS, Beth Gendreau, at (562) 861-9833.

DeAnne Kiralla

Secretary, Downey PTA HELPS
