Pasadena ousts Downey in first round

DOWNEY - The Downey High School boys' basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 16-12 and a league record of 7-3.The Vikings traveled to tenth seeded Pasadena last Friday night and lost a tough game, 71-68, to the Bulldogs in the first round of the C.I.F. Division I-AA playoffs. Pasadena will now move on to the second round and play Loyola. Loyola defeated Montebello 86-45 in their first round game. The Vikings started their playoff game slow and trailed by 16 points going into the fourth quarter. A late rally left Downey three points short as the final buzzer sounded. Downey, despite this last loss, continued to improve as the season went on and made a strong push toward a league title. Warren was the San Gabriel Valley League champion this season with a league record of 8-2. A highlight for the Viking season was winning the Max Preps Holiday Classic Tournament Slice Division in Palm Desert over the Christmas Break. The Vikings defeated Capistrano Valley, 53-41, on December 29th to win the tournament. The Lady Vikings traveled to fourth seeded Long Beach Poly last Saturday night and lost, 66-33, to the Lady Jackrabbits in the first round of the C.I.F. Division I-AA playoffs. Long Beach Poly will now play Great Oak in the second round. Great Oak defeated Brea-Olinda 58-48 in their first round game. The Lady Vikings, despite this last loss, consistently improved throughout the season and always played hard. Lynwood was the San Gabriel Valley League champion with a league record of 10-0. A highlight for the Lady Vikings this season was winning the Southern California Holiday Prep Classic N.C.A.A. Division in San Diego over Christmas Break. The Lady Vikings defeated Sonora, 47-44, on December 29th to win the tournament.
