Opening of new photo exhibit draws hundreds

DOWNEY - Nearly 300 people attended the opening of the J. Arthur Morris photography exhibit at Stay Gallery last week, paying tribute to the Downey philanthropist who made his mark in the city in more ways than one.Morris traveled the world and photographed "everything possible." After his death last year at age 93, Morris' children loaned his entire photography collection to the gallery. Those in attendance last week include local philanthropists and community leaders Dr. Mary Stauffer and Bill Kirkwood; Mayor Mario Guerra and councilmen Roger Brossmer and Alex Saab; and Stay Gallery board members Phil Davis, Dr. Robert Jagielski and Kirk Cartozian. Several people volunteered to make the night possible, including Laura Hurtado, Sara Hurtado, Olivia Hurtado, Adriana Hurtado, Cristina Ortiz, Wilmber Vargas, Aldo Fratti and Irma Favela. Entertainment was provided by Downey High School's jazz band, the Nu Movement Trio and Bonafassi. Local chef Alex Jimenez donated the hors d'oeuvres and the Lock & Key Social Drinkery - set to open later this spring on Downey Avenue - created hand-crafted punches specifically for the event. Angel City Brewery provided beer.
