OLPH Guild announces scholarship, grant recipients

DOWNEY - The Women’s Guild of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church has awarded five Downey area 8th grade graduate students with $1,000 scholarships to further their Catholic high school education.

The scholarships are based on completion of the 8th grade and acceptance to a Catholic high school of their choice.

This year’s recipients completed a portfolio which included transcripts, acceptance letters to a Catholic high school, placement tests, letters of recommendation and the applicant’s Personal Statement.

This year’s scholarship awardees (and the Catholic high school they will be attending this fall) include:

Jenna Mielk (St. Joseph)
Emmanuel Garcia (Bosco)
Xavier Grizzelle (Bosco)
Israel Ramirez (Loyola)
Ricardo Torres (Loyola)

The Women’s Guild also announced the recipients of this year’s community grant awards. This year, awards were approved for all 10 applicants and total $8,575.

Recipients include:

Friends of the Downey Library Student & Children’s Programs ($1,000), OLPH School Music Program ($1,100), OLPH School TK Program ($330), OLPH School TK/Spanish Program ($525), OLPH School TK/Classroom Manipulatives ($1,645), OLPH Life After Loss Ministry ($700), St. Dominic Savio Church Food Pantry ($1,000), and St. Gertrude the Great School Reading Curriculum grades 3-8 ($1,000).

The OLPH Women’s Guild grants are awarded annually. Applications are made available in February/March on the guild website at womensguild.olphdowney.com.
