DOWNEY — The Downey City Council will select Downey’s next mayor at a special meeting Thursday.

The meeting will begin with the installation of Councilman-elect Hector Sosa, who was elected in November to represent District 2.

Blanca Pacheco was mayor until she resigned Monday to be sworn into the state Assembly, leaving a vacancy on the council.

It’s unlikely Mayor Pro Tem Catherine Alvarez can secure the three votes necessary for the mayoralship. She is facing a recall election Jan. 31, 2023.

The next options are council members Mario Trujillo and Claudia Frometa. Trujillo was elected to the city council in 2020 and Frometa in 2018.

Trujillo declined the position of mayor pro tem last year. Frometa has served as mayor twice, most recently in 2021.
