New podcast, 'Talking Downey with Mario and Eric,' makes its premiere

Mario Guerra and Eric Pierce

DOWNEY — A new podcast about the city of Downey premiered this week.

“Talking Downey with Mario and Eric” is hosted by former Downey mayor Mario Guerra and journalist Eric Pierce. Each episode will feature commentary about issues affecting Downey, along with guest interviews, new local developments, restaurant reviews, and fun segments such as “Downey History Minute” and the “Dork of the Month.”

“We wanted to create something fun, positive and light-hearted that focused on our hometown of Downey,” said Guerra. “After eight years in public office, and decades as a resident and volunteer, I think I offer a unique perspective into what’s happening in Downey. And as editor of our local paper, so does Eric.

“We’ve always felt that the more that our residents knew about Downey, the better our community would be. Each show will have something in it that will surprise you. And while it is not intended as a tough news show it will of course feature local politics and our council happenings and votes.”

Guerra is a two-time mayor of Downey and currently serves as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. Pierce is editor of the Downey Patriot newspaper and a realtor.

“In many ways me and Mario are polar opposites, down to our personalities,” said Pierce. “But that’s what makes the podcast fun. We can bounce between serious conversations and silly jokes effortlessly. Our common bond is our love for Downey.”

Hans Fritz serves as executive producer of the podcast, which is currently available on YouTube. “Talking Downey with Mario and Eric” will also be available on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Facebook and other venues. They can be reached at TalkingDowney@gmail.com or call 562-706-4114. They welcome thoughts on issues you want to hear about.
