Naming contest for space shuttle mock-up

DOWNEY - The city of Downey is hosting a contest to name the full-size space shuttle mock-up currently in storage at Downey Studios. The mock-up is owned by the city and is the first full-sized space shuttle ever built. It was used for two decades for detailed engineering fittings and testing. It has remained in storage and the city hopes to preserve and restore the shuttle by building a new facility for it next to the Columbia Memorial Space Center. The shuttle cannot be named after a business or service organization. The winner will be recognized at a City Council meeting and invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony as a special guest of the council. Entry forms are online at downeyca.org under "City News." Entry deadline is Aug. 31.
