Memorial Day observed at cemetery

DOWNEY - American Legion Post 270 will help observe Memorial Day at a special program May 25 at the Downey Cemetery.The ceremony will feature remarks by the Downey Cemetery District Trustees, a wreath-laying, a rifle salute by Post 270, and the playing of Taps. Past commander Larry Batulis will offer a few prayers and a brief eulogy will be given from present commander James Higuera. No parking will be permitted at the cemtery. A free shuttle service will take guests from the Lakewood Boulevard Green Line parking lot to the cemtery, and then back. The ceremony will take place at the Veteran's Memorial Wall and garden inside the cemetery. The program begins at 11 a.m. and lasts approximately one hour. The Downey Cemetery traces its history back to the 1870's and serves the cities of Downey, Bellflower, Paramount and parts of South Gate.
