DOWNEY — Mazen Nabulsi, a Cerritos College alumnus and chairperson of the Cerritos College Foundation, has announced his candidacy for the Cerritos College Board of Trustees seat (Area 1) which covers the City of Downey, Norwalk, and portions of Bell Gardens and South Gate.

Mazen is a lifelong Downey resident, attending the Downey Unified school system including graduating from Downey High School. He received his Associate Degree in General Education from Cerritos College. Upon graduation, Mazen transferred to Pepperdine University where he earned a political science degree.

Thereafter, he earned a law degree at California Western, San Diego, and practiced in the field of real estate, contracts, and tort law. Mazen currently works in Downey as a real estate broker-associate at 24 Hour Real Estate.

“I am passionate about education and continuing to create successful pathways for our students. I will work tirelessly to create partnerships and opportunities between Cerritos College and our communities”  said Mazen.

While he was a full-time student at Cerritos College, Mazen served as student body president and student trustee to the Cerritos College Board. The student body voted him Person of the Year and Student Newsmaker of the Year.

During his tenure, Mazen helped lobby state and national officials to support community college educational funding.   As president, he lobbied school administrators and officials to maintain educational funding levels, which helped to avoid classroom summer cuts, and extended library hours during exam periods. He also supported our students with educational and extracurricular activities.

“As student body president, I lobbied in Washington D.C. for further community college funding. I met with local and state officials to advocate for passage of a bill which helped to bolster funding for K-12, including Cerritos College.” said Mazen  “When our summer school programs were in danger of being eliminated, I advocated our school administration at Cerritos College to continue funding it for our students.”

Mazen is running on four key points: taxpayer accountability and transparency; community outreach and opportunities for all new and current students; partnering with local organizations and employers to expand post-graduation employment opportunities for all students; and the modernization of classrooms by continuing to bring the latest technology, and campus safety.

“My commitment to Cerritos College is for life because of the opportunities it provided me and what we can offer to the community and all of our students.” said Mazen.

Mazen is endorsed by Downey Council Member Rick Rodriguez, Downey Council Member Alex Saab, former Downey Mayor Mario A. Guerra, Cerritos College Board Trustee Zurich Lewis, and former Cerritos College Board Trustee and former Norwalk Mayor Bob Arthur.  For Mazen’s full list of endorsements and detailed positions on why he is running for Cerritos College Board of Trustees, please visit www.MazenforCerritosCollege.com.
