Mater Dei too much for Warren

DOWNEY - The Warren High School boys' basketball team had their gymnasium "the cave" packed last Tuesday evening, Feb. 19, in hopes of pulling off an upset against the top seeded Mater Dei Monarchs.The Bears fell to defeat 74-47, however, the Warren High faithful were out in full force supporting their team. The Bears trailed 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and were down 40-18 at halftime. Mater Dei went on an early run in the third quarter and outscored Warren 19-14. Mater Dei led at the end of the third quarter 59-32. The Bears matched Mater Dei scoring at 15 in the fourth quarter but came up short. Mater Dei will play Etiwanda at the Anaheim Convention Center tomorrow night for the C.I.F. Division 1-AA championship. Warren finished their season with an overall record of 22-6 and a league record of 8-2. The Bears were the 2013 San Gabriel Valley League champions and were seeded 16th, out of 32 teams, in the C.I.F. Division 1-AA playoffs. The Bears advanced to the second round of the C.I.F. playoffs by defeating Trabuco Hills 51-48 in their first round game at home on Feb. 15. Coach Hart was very pleased with the effort of his team. Hart's team worked hard and continued to improve throughout the season. This is the first S.G.V.L. title for Coach Hart. The Bears will return several key players to next year's team. Juniors John Ohakamnu, Lorel Johnson, Ife Kalejaiye, Deron Johnson and Gerardo Zavala will all return with more experience and skill under their belts. Warren's co-league champion junior varsity team will also add more skill and depth. Things are looking good for Warren Bear basketball.
