Mabel Brown

November 13, 1919 - July 6, 2023

Mabel Bott Brown passed away on July 6, 2023, of natural causes at the age of 103. She was loved by her family and friends, and will be remembered and missed.

Mabel was born November 13, 1919, in Brigham City, Utah, to Nephi Jensen Bott and Jennie Zundel Ward. She grew up in Daly City, California, and Logan, Utah. She first met Charles Franklin Brown in junior high English class, but it wasn’t until a few years later, at Logan High School, that Charles “looked on her with more appreciative eyes.” They both graduated from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College) and were married in 1941. Their daughter Linda was born two years later. Charles served in the Army during World War II. More than 70 years later, Mabel remembered Charles returning home safely after the war: “I can still close my eyes and remember the feeling of complete happiness and relief and peace that I felt.”

After the war, the family of three moved to Southern California to find work, and never left.

Mabel volunteered at Downey Community Hospital for thirty years. She hosted many Christmas luncheons at their home, and countless Easter egg hunts in their large, beautiful backyard.

They loved to travel near and far: Europe, Asia, and often back to Logan to visit family.

Mabel was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a loyal supporter of her grandchildren, helping them with college tuition, attending events, and always remembering their birthdays with a card and a check.

Mabel was petite, never weighing more than 100 pounds, and topping out at 5 feet tall. As each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren inevitably grew taller than her, Grandma made them recite Rule #585: “Even if I’m taller, Grandma’s still the boss.”

As she grew older, Mabel was preceded in death by her siblings, her husband, and many dear friends. In her later years, she became a voracious reader. Linda worked tirelessly not only to keep her continually supplied with books, but also to help her live as independently as possible at home.

We will dearly miss our wonderful Mother and Grandma.

Mabel is survived by her daughter Linda, son-in-law Richard Allen, her five grandchildren and their spouses, and her 22 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
