Lupita Infante to be honored with Mayor's Excellence Award

DOWNEY – Grammy Award-nominated singer Lupita Infante will be honored with the Mayor’s Excellence Award at Tuesday’s Downey city council meeting.

The award will be delivered by Mayor Mario Trujillo, Infante’s former kindergarten teacher.

“As Lupita’s former kindergarten teacher, I am proud of her accomplishments and commitment to paying tribute to the tradition and beauty of our heritage,” said Trujillo. “She is a role model for the Latin community and women. Downey is proud to be called home by great leaders like Lupita Infante.”

Infante is the granddaughter of Pedro Infante Cruz, one of the most beloved Mexican singers and actors of the 20th century.

"It’s a full circle moment because I first met Mayor Mario Trujillo when he was my teacher in elementary school,” Infante said. “I’m dedicating this award to my mother, who first came to Downey looking for a brighter future, and to this beautiful city that has helped shape my path in life and in music.”

The Mayor's Excellence Award celebrates individuals’ selfless dedication and commitment to going above and beyond for others. The honor is awarded to those “whose heartfelt contributions and notable accomplishments have proven invaluable to the community, playing a vital role in advancing the shared goal of making the city a better place for all.”

In a press release, the city of Downey praised Infante for being “part of an emerging generation of ranchera artists who are so deeply steeped in their traditions that they possess the confidence and expertise to brilliantly remake them for their Millennial and Gen Z fans.”
