Library celebrates National Library Week

DOWNEY – The Downey City Library has scheduled several activities as it celebrates National Library Week from April 12-18. Join Leslie Padilla-Williams, recipient of the National Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Latina Entrepreneur Award, on Monday, April 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as she talks about How to Start Your Own Business. This is a free event open to adults.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14 and 15, from 10:30-11 a.m., is “Read with Mayor Luis Marquez” for Preschool and Bilingual Story Times. Children will enjoy some favorite stories with the mayor and make a special gift to give in thanks. Photo opportunities will be available with the Mayor.

Story Time is a free event for individual children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers; please, no groups.

Join award-winning actress and story teller, Ina Buckner-Barnette, on Thursday, April 16 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. as she presents a show of Curiosities – strange happenings, world mysteries, and ghostly tales with an interactive twist.

This program is free for families with children ages 3 to 12.

The Friends of the Downey City Library are hosting a bus trip to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bus will pick up passengers in the parking lot outside the Downey City Library. There is as $5 fee to reserve your space on the bus.

Bus passengers must sign and turn in a liability waiver before boarding the bus; register and pay at the Friends’ Gift Shop.

Enjoy a children’s READ-A-THON on Saturday, April 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A host of volunteers will be reading favorite children’s books. There will be balloons, crafts, and free giveaways. Everyone is welcome to come and participate.
