Letter to the Editor: Leave our fireworks alone

Dear Editor:

I read the article regarding Councilman Sean Ashton's possible proposal to completely ban fireworks. I understand that many people continue to blast illegal fireworks but this is not really a very good proposal. Here are some reasons why I believe this is such an absurd idea:

1. People don't care. No matter what, they are going to continue lighting fireworks. Just continue stronger and more patrols around neighborhoods that usually pop more fireworks.

2. You can't punish those who love the enjoyment of getting legal fireworks and being with their families. Especially during this pandemic, it would be a really idiotic choice because it keeps us busy and also helps mental health.

3. You will be hurting those who use such firework brands like TNT and Phantom as fundraiser worthy. Most places like churches use this as a huge financial advantage.

I think it's just really an idiotic thing to do because the council is just playing politics. All they do is think ban fireworks, however, they don't see the negative consequences. Look at the fun and excitement legal fireworks bring. For me, it brings amazement and joy as well as to the people around me.

Now I don't care about people blowing up illegal fireworks, however, those with pets and others who find them annoying will most likely care about illegal fireworks popping off. That's why measures such as extra patrolling in areas where fireworks are used and huge fines can maybe help a bit more.

I am writing this so that people like me still get a chance using fireworks that are legal in their own homes.
