Letter to the Editor: Homeless encampments

Dear Editor:

As a longtime resident of Downey, I was happy to read about the $1 million renovation of Rio San Gabriel Park. (Rio San Gabriel Park Awarded $1 million Grant for Renovations,” 2/23/22).

However, I’m mainly concerned about the homeless that have moved into the back of Rio San Gabriel Park. There is also a large encampment on the riverbed. Both are illegal.

I’ve called Downey Police numerous times. When and if they ever clear it out, a few days later they’re back.

I’m curious as to why laws apply to me but not to them. They’re ruining the surrounding neighborhoods.
