Letter to the Editor: Crack down on illegal fireworks
Dear Editor:
Illegal fireworks are no different than illegal drugs. It's big business.
The police and fire departments should go after suppliers; if this means searching homes and garages, get the warrants and search. Use drones, undercover officers, fine homeowners and landlords. Come down hard on these offenders.
After we adopt rules we have to get the word out. Signs need to be posted at all major intersections, parks and schools. Past offenders should be contacted by phone or letter: "The City of Downey Does Not Allow Fireworks."
They, the people using illegal fireworks, are not celebrating Independence Day. We, law-abiding citizens, are allowing big business and the immaturity of young men to make a mockery of our holiday and our way of life.
