Kolar YMCA to start construction next month
DOWNEY — The stage is set for construction to start on Downey’s new YMCA facility, with the project gaining City Council’s stamp of approval on Tuesday.
City council voted 3-0, with Councilwoman Dorothy Pemberton excusing herself due to her position on the Y’s board of directors, and Councilwoman Claudia Frometa absent.
Located at the southwest corner of Downey Avenue and Arnett Street, the existing former site – which was closed during the covid-19 pandemic – will be demolished save for the 7,625 square foot gymnasium which will be retained, retrofitted, upgraded, and added upon.
The new 18,718 square foot facility will be constructed to include a 2,271 square foot utility basement, and 1,640 square foot outdoor pickleball court.
Construction is currently scheduled to start next month and last through April 2026.
The current facility was built in 1965 and was already in need of significant repair and update at the time of its closure. The organization is currently trying to raise $20 million for the new building.
