Kids urged to read
DOWNEY - The Downey City Library's summer reading program for children, themed "Make a Splash - Read!", begins June 21 for children up to 12 years old.Between June 21 and Aug. 7, children may check out books and read them at home to earn prizes. Free balloons will be given to the first 75 children who register on June 21-23 starting at 10 a.m. Special events for children ages 5-12 will be offered at 2 p.m. every Thursday during the month of July. Free show passes will be distributed 30 minutes before show time to the first 110 children at each performance. "This year's program encourages kids to explore the world of water through stories and activities about oceans, rivers, lakes and the creatures that live there," Children's Librarian Gina Orello. "Children will develop a reading habit to last a lifetime thanks to the generosity of our Friends of the Downey City Library and other community donors."
