High school sports camps getting underway

DOWNEY – The Downey High School girls’ volleyball program will be hosting five camps this summer. All five camps will be Monday-Wednesday. 

The first camp will take place July 10-12 and is for girls in grades 9-12. The camp session will be from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The second camp session will take place July 17-19 and is also for girls in grades 9-12. This camp session will also be from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

Camp 2A will also take place July 17-19 and is designed for elementary and middle school aged children in grades K-8. This camp will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. and the cost is $50. 

The fourth camp session will take place July 24-26 and is designed for girls and boys in grades 9-12. The camp session will be from 8-10 a.m. The fifth and final camp session will take place July 31-1 and will be for girls in grades 9-12.

■The Downey High School boys’ tennis program will start their summer workout sessions next Tuesday, June 13 and will run through Thursday, July 27. 

Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the tennis courts at Downey High School. The cost is $60.

■The Downey High School football program will be starting their summer football session on Monday, June 26 and it will conclude on Thursday, August 2. Practices will run from 3-6 p.m. on the Downey High School football field.

Incoming freshmen and junior varsity players will be starting their summer football session on Monday, June 26 and it will also conclude on Thursday, August 2. Practices will run from 2-5 p.m. There will also be a mandatory parent meeting on June 27 at 7 p.m.

■The Downey High School wrestling program started their summer wrestling camp on Monday, June 5 and it will run through Thursday, July 13. Practices will run from 2-4 p.m. Sign-ups for incoming freshman were held Monday at the Sports Orientation inside the gym.

■The Downey High School baseball program will have two summer sessions. Session One was this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and yesterday. Session Two will be next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

■The Warren High School boys’ basketball camp will be held June 12-15 in the Warren High School Gym. The camp is open to student-athletes age(s) 13-18 and will be from 2-4 p.m.

This camp is designed for boys who want to be a part of the summer freshman basketball program. Student-athletes will participate in instruction for basketball fundamentals. All campers selected will receive a camp t-shirt and participation in summer basketball games.
The Elite Position Camp will be held June 19-22 and is open for boys and girls age(s) 8-18 years of age. The camp will run from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and will be held inside the Warren High School Gym.

There will be a sibling discount as well as a team discount on 8 or more players. Athletes will work on specific position skills to better understand their role both on and off the court. The camp focus will be on skills specific to point guard, perimeter and post play. Players will be challenged with more difficult ball handling, shooting and post and perimeter play. Competitions and games will also be held.

■Warren High School head volleyball coach Scotty Lane will be hosting a summer volleyball camp July 25-27 from 6-9 in the Warren High School gym. 

The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 9-12. The cost is $110 and includes a t-shirt. All counselors coaching at the camp will have Division One college level or professional beach/indoor player experience. 

The camp will focus on position and skills training. No athletic physical is needed for the three-day camp and there is no pre-registration. Campers can pay cash or check on the first day of camp. In addition, the Warren High School girls’ volleyball tryouts will take place August 7-8 from 2-4 p.m. at the Warren High School gym. Student-athletes in grades 9-12 are welcome to tryout. 

 

■The Warren High School football program began its summer practice session on Monday and it will run through June 30. 

The session is Monday through Friday and is open to student-athletes ages 14-18. Workouts are from 2-6:30 p.m. on the Warren High School football field. Athletes are to bring practice wear, water and cleats.
